The Captain's Cabin
Lochaline, West Coast of Scotland

Architect: Roderick James Architects
Highlights: Unique elliptical house overlooking the Mull
The Captain’s Cabin is a delightful, compact elliptical cabin with outstanding views over the Sound of Mull. Situated on the same four area site as AirShip 002 and The Pilot House (other designs by Out of the Blue Ltd.), it has its own private balcony, which extends over the whole flat roof of the old chapel below. It comprises a nautically themed saloon and galley, bedroom with a king size bed and a shower room. Highly insulated with underfloor heating and a 100% renewable energy supply and delicious spring water.
Designed to be the smallest practical living space that doesn’t involve moving furniture around to make it work. Out of the Blue Ltd. used their experience with designing and living on houseboats and yachts over the past 40 years to create Captain’s Cabin.
Designed for a couple with bedroom, shower room, wc, galley kitchen and woodstove heated living space it embraces a dramatic view towards Ardnamurchan Point and the wild Atlantic beyond.
The interior uses re-used timber and has a nautical theme, whilst the exterior is clad in corrugated aluminium over a structural insulated panel core.
The elliptical SIP structure was designed and fitted by Westwind Oak. It was perched on top of an existing building which added to the challenge for the site team but was successfully completed thanks to our skilled carpenters.
